XGA vs WXGA Projector Resolutions. What’s the Difference?

Resolution is a crucial aspect of the projector selection process. You will either want a basic projector for general office/classroom powerpoint presentations, or you will want a top of the line HD projector for movie viewing or gaming in the comfort of your home.  The resolution you choose will depend on what you plan to use the projector for.

What is Projector Resolution?

Projector resolution is the effective number of pixels that a projector can render. Picture elements, also known as pixels, are the individual microscopic dots that make up the final projected image. The aspect ratio refers to the amount of horizontal and vertical pixels, which in turn reflects the sizes and dimensions of the projected image. XGA (Extended Graphics Array) and WXGA (Wide Extended Graphics Array) are the most commonly used by most projectors these days.

Extended Graphics Array

XGA has an aspect ratio of 4:3, this resolution offers an effective resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels, which equals to 786,000 pixels being rendered at any given time which results in an even sharper image and great detail. Usually, the higher the number of total pixels in any given resolution, the clearer the overall projected image will be.

 Wide Extended Graphics Array

WXGA carries a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, the WXGA resolution results in a much wider aspect ratio of 16:10, this means that the horizontal pixels make up twice the vertical pixels. The WXGA is the most commonly used resolution in many entry-level projectors these days, this is due to its clearer detailed images and very enticing price tag. The resolution for the WXGA equals 1,024,000 pixels.

Which Resolution is Right for Your Projector?

The number of resolutions a projector can display will also reflect on its price which is helpful when trying to decide which projector suits your needs.  Paying more for a higher resolution projector may pay off if you need to display higher-end graphics, but entry to mid-level projector will offer a cost advantage while being able to do the job you need it to do.

Each company will have different needs and different budgets, so it is important to point out that both projectors types are great, so the decision is up to you.
