In this day and age, it is not uncommon to encounter fake products, so it’s no surprise that there now exists a market for counterfeit projectors and projector bulbs. These projectors are very convincing replicas in all aspects, apart than the actual functioning side of things!
While shopping for projectors online, it is imperative that customers make purchases from reputable projector websites and not from sites such as eBay or Amazon. These websites make it far too easy for sellers of fake products to get their products online and make money from inexperienced buyers.
The sad truth is that you might not know that the product you purchased is a fake until it arrives at your door, and by then it turns into a lot of hassle to try and return your product and get a refund. The internet is full of scam artists eager to make a quick buck.
To avoid something like this happening to you, there are a few things that you can look out for when buying a projector online. Here are our top 6 tips to consider when buying a projector:
If the price seems too good to be true, then it probably is. Projectors are not cheap products to purchase as they contain complicated technology that cannot be reproduced easily or cheaply. There is a constant R&D process behind the technology to ensure that the best products get to the market.
It’s a red flag when you read a product description for a projector with 1000 lumens priced for €100. This is impossibly cheap and not real, and if this was the actual case, then the seller would be losing hundreds of euros with every sell. On top of this, we can pretty much guarantee you that this projector does in fact not have 1000 lumens and will have a very dull image with low resolution.
Read the product reviews. In this day and age, consumers are running rampant with reviewing products and services. A simple and quick way to see if a product is counterfeit is to read the reviews from previous buyers. If you see a lot of complaints and negative comments on a product, it’s probably not the real deal and you should steer clear.
If you have already purchased a projector that you suspect is a fake product, there are a few tell-tale signs you should look for:
A lot of Amazon and eBay products state they have fixed focus. Although this sounds like a positive descriptor, what it actually means is that the projector needs to be an exact distance away from the projector screen for it to be in focus. If it is any closer or further away, then you have a blurry image. This is not an ideal situation if you have a limited amount of space for the projector.
If the price of the projector is less than €100, then forget about it. Even a low quality, low lumen projector will still begin to retail at around €150.
Not only are fake projectors bad quality, but they are also extremely dangerous. If you read a product description for a fake projector that says ‘turn off after 2-3 hours to avoid overheating’, this is a huge red flag. This is the company warning you that this machine is prone to overheating and possibly catching fire. Remember that these products are made with the cheapest in materials and are not reliable when it comes to safety.
On top of counterfeit projectors being dangerous and unreliable, there is also no guarantee attached to a projector bought from eBay or Amazon like there would be when purchasing from reputable companies such as Lightmeup.ie who are accredited and experienced Epson resellers. Epson states that their products are “covered by warranty against defects in workmanship and materials when operated under normal use and handling conditions, as indicated in the product documentation”.
The best way to avoid fake projectors entirely is to ensure you are purchasing your products from a reputable source. And although Amazon and eBay are great for purchasing everyday products and services, when it comes to technology, you should be careful who you trust.
