Do I Really Need a Projector Screen?

If you’re asking this question, you’ve probably already purchased a projector and are trying to figure out if it’s worth it to now spend more money on a projector screen.

As with most things in life, it depends on the return on investment that you are expecting.  If it’s a business presentation, a pitch, a training seminar, we’ll bet that a focused and slick presentation is important.  And what’s also important is the attention span of the audience to get your key messages across.  So how does having a screen or not having a screen to use for your projection, impact on this attention and focus?

Well, we’re here to give you the facts, and yes, you technically would be able to watch your projector on a flat white wall, but what would be the point in spending the money on a projector if you are not getting the full effect?  Here are our top 3 considerations for why you should invest in a screen to complement your recent projector purchase.

There are a number of reasons why a wall is less desirable than a screen:

  1. Wall Texture

Although your wall may look flat, if you really inspect it or even run your hand down it, you will notice there is a slight texture that really affects the overall quality of your projector image. There is no texture on a projector screen for this reason.

  1. Brightness and Tones

If you somehow figured out how to remove all texture from your wall, there is still the issue of lighting. Your wall does not have the capabilities to direct and focus the light from your projector back towards your eyes. This is not your wall’s fault; it is just that walls are not designed to reflect focused light like a projector screen that has been designed, with years of research, to do so.

  1. Frame

Strangely, our brains need a frame around something to increase our viewing focus, meaning that simply projecting an image onto a wall will not satisfy our brain. Having a dedicated frame around your image, like a projector screen border, helps our brains to focus on the image. A frame gives us a fixed reference point, this helps to focus our eyes on the image and draws our eyes away from light and distractions in the background.

To sum up, not using a projector screen will drastically reduce your return on investment.
